The popular Rhone-style focussed wine event came to Wellington for the first time this weekend. The tastings run by Dan Sims of Bottle Shop Concepts have been a hit in Australia, and it has also proved to be worthwhile conducting in Auckland, the event there held the week before, this year being the second visit to that city. Local and overseas exhibitors put on Rhone-styled wines for tasting – Viognier, Marsanne, Roussanne, Syrah, Grenache, Mourvedre and any combination of, is shown. The diversity is exciting, and for New Zealand producers especially, the Rhone varietals are getting their due attention.
The atmosphere and theming of Game of Rhones lends itself to a lot of fun, and many exhibitors and attendees dress up in cosplay costuming in the theme of the T.V. series ‘Game of Thrones’. A different demographic is targeted and achieved, and it is a win-win situation for all concerned.
I was unable to attend the event in Wellington, but have caught up with a number of exhibitors and attendees who were there. There were around 250 public attending which is very heartening for a first-up event. Wellington has a reputation of loving to ‘dress-up’ and party (eg: the Sevens), and maybe next time there will be more at the Game of Rhones.
Well done Dan Sims, and your team for bringing Game of Rhones to Wellington. We look forward to it next year. www.bottleshopconcepts.com/gameofrhones/
