Gisborne Regional Wine Awards 2012

By May 26, 2012No Comments
The results of the 2012 Gisborne Regional Wine Awards have been released. This is the second year of this competition, which evolved from the International Chardonnay Challenge competition which ran for a decade, focussing on the wines of Gisborne, rather than an international perspective on one variety. The competition joins a growing number of regional or specific-focus competitions. This year’s judging took place 24-25 May, and the judges were headed by Tony Bish, of Sacred Hill. Interestingly the make–up of the panel was media-based, with Michael Cooper, John Saker, Cameron Douglas MS, Yvonne Lorkin, Liz Wheadon of Glengarry, with winemaker Simon Fell as associate judge. It is good to see personnel who are relatively new to professional judging given the opportunity to participate, and for the competition to have judges influential in the wider market be involved. This year, only 7 golds were awarded from a total of 132 wines judged. The Supreme Wine of the Show was the Villa Maria ‘Reserve Barrique Fermented’ Gisborne Chardonnay 2010. The 2009 vintage of this wine won this award at last year’s show. Full results will be published soon on www.gisbornewine.co.nz/regionalwineawards/home/  Here are the published results:
