Gisborne Regional Wine Awards 2014

By May 24, 2014No Comments

The results of the 2014 Gisborne Regional Wine Awards have been announced. For the second year running, the Villa Maria ‘Reserve Barrique Fermented’ Chardonnay 2012 took out the ‘Supreme Wine of Show’ trophy, this wine the top wine at last year’s competition. This label has topped the competition from the start, the 2009 vintage awarded top place in the inaugural 2011 judging and the 2010 vintage judged supreme wine at the 2012 show. It’s a superb achievement for Villa Maria, who introduced the wine from Gisborne fruit around three decades ago; this result also confirming the company’s position as one of the best Chardonnay producers in the country. In this year’s judging, the 2013 vintage of Villa Maria ‘Reserve Barrique Fermented’ Chardonnay also took gold, so this wine may be a likely contender for the top award next year!

I’m a supporter of regionally–focussed wine judging competitions for many reasons, but especially as they look at the wines from a local perspective and take into consideration their uniqueness as well as idiosyncrasies. The danger, of course is that an overall view to quality and standing can be lost, but for the Gisborne show this is countered by the makeup of the judging panel, this year led by Tony Bish, with Rod Easthope, Joelle Thomson, Jim Harré, Simon Fells and Simon Nunns, who have a very wide experience. To further the quality aspect of the medal awards, this year Tony Bish raised the standard of a bronze award to an average score of 16.0 points out of 20 from 15.5, this move similar to the raising of the bronze medal bar as in the Air N.Z. Wine Awards.

This year’s Gisborne Regional Awards was judged on Thursday 22 May. Of 149 wines entered for judging, there were 15 (10.07%) gold medals, 16 (10.74%) silvers and 46 (30.87%) bronze medals. It appears the gold count is a little higher than usual, where as the silvers and the bronzes are lower than the average, and the overall medal success a little lower compared with other shows. The awards pay tribute to the Gisborne wine industry as a whole, recognising valued contributors to the region. The diversity of the area is also celebrated with ‘selections’ of wines. Following are the results from the awards dinner last night. Also listed are the 15 gold medal winning wines. It should be noted that the class category winners are not necessarily gold medal winners. www.gisbornewine.co.nz/regionalwineawards/home/
