By October 8, 2011No Comments
The results of the 2011 Hawke’s Bay A&P Mercedes-Benz Wine Awards have been released. Of over 330 wines entered, there were 33 gold, 58 silver and 121 bronze medals awarded. The judging, held over 19-20 September, was chaired by Rod McDonald with the judging panels consisting of Joelle Thomson, Matt Deller, Cath Oates, Warren Gibson, Ant Mackenzie, and Steve Flamsteed of Giant Steps winery in Australia.
The Villa Maria group was dominant in the gold medal results with 7 golds for Villa Maria labels, 4 for Esk Valley and 1 for Vidals, the tally over one-third of the total golds awarded. Alpha Domus, Church Road and Trinity Hill each took 3 golds and Te Awa’s ‘Left Field’ wines took 2 golds.
First run in 2001, the Hawke’s Bay Wine Awards has provided a focus on the wine and varieties of New Zealand’s second largest wine-growing region. The show incorporates a Museum Class showcasing wines which have developed well with bottle-age. The trophies will be announced on 18 October. The gold medal winners follow.
