By October 16, 2013No Comments

The results of the 2013 Avenues International Aromatic Wine Competition have been announced. The Supreme Champion Wine Trophy was awarded to the Hunters Marlborough Gewurztraminer 2013. This is another fine result for Hunters who have excelled with this variety and Riesling, in the aromatics category over the years.

The other trophies awarded were Champion Pinot Gris, going to Starborough ‘Family Estate’ Marlborough Pinot Gris 2013, Champion Riesling to Turnstone Central Otago Riesling 2013, Champion Sauvignon Blanc to Saint Clair ‘Pioneer Block 24 – Arthur’ Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2013, the Champion Gewurztraminer to the Hunters Marlborough Gewurztraminer 2013, and the Champion Other Aromatic Trophy to Villa Maria ‘Private Bin’ East Coast Arneis 2013. The Spence Brothers Trophy for Best Sauvignon Blanc Producer was awarded to Saint Clair Family Estate.

The International Aromatics Competition was conducted for the eleventh time this year, and was judged over 12 and 13 October, under the auspices of the Canterbury A&P Show. The judging aims to highlight to the industry and consumers the best commercially available aromatic wines, made from Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer and Viognier. The Muscat, Verdelho, Arneis and Sauvignon Gris varieties are also included, and entries are welcomed from any internationally recognised wine region. This year’s judging panel was headed again by Terry Copeland, with Sam Kim, Jim Harré, Yvonne Lorkin, Ben Glover, Petter Evans and Sarah-Kate Dineen as the judges. The innovation of a Museum class was introduced this year.

Of 429 wines entered for juding, there were 44 (10.26%) gold medals awarded, including 11 each for Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Gris, with 9 for Riesling and 7 for Gewurztraminer. There were 87 (20.28%) silvers, of which 39 went to Sauvignon Blanc, 18 to Pinot Gris and 13 to Riesling. There were 171 (39.86%) bronzes, of which there were 59 for Sauvignon Blanc, 40 for Pinot Gris, 31 for Riesling, and 15 each for Gewurztraminer and ‘Other Aromatic Varieties’.  This is a total of 302 medals from the entries, which is among the highest proportion in wine shows, indicating the high quality of the wines.  No wonder why judges enjoy being invited to work at this competition!
