Marlborough Winemakers Wine Options 2011 – Round Three

By September 16, 2011No Comments

Held at the same time as the All Blacks vs Japan game of the RWC, Round 3 of the Marlborough Winemakers Wine Options 2011 still elicited a near-full turnout. Andrew Parkinson, fine wine manager of Negociants NZ Ltd selected a number of challenging wines that truly tested the experience and knowledge of the Marlborough wine industry players. Interestingly a Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc was served for the first time in the competition, and though an older example, it was the lowest-scored wine. Maybe minds were on the rugby game?

The results:
1st – 100/150 points, Peaches and Cream, Marlborough Vintners with international personnel
2nd – Riojan Rollers, Whitehaven, after a tie-break
3rd – Truckin’ Beers Hours Later, Bec Wiffen, Marcus Wright, Sarah Burton and Mike Just

The wines served were:
Saint Clair ‘Pioneer Block 1 Foundation Block’ Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2008
Cantine Pra ‘Staforte’ Soave 2006
Fromm ‘La Strada’ Marlborough Chardonnay 2008
Ossian VdT Castilla y Leon Verdejo 2007
Guigal Gigondas 2007
Vasse Felix Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon 2008
Pian delle Vigne ‘Vignaferrovia’ Brunello di Montalcino 2007

The next round will be conducted by Terry Copeland of Treasury Wine Estates in October. Click here to see Round Two, August, and here to see Round One, July, results and wines.
