New Zealand International Wine Show 2012 – Gold Medal Winners

By September 17, 2012No Comments

The medal results of the 2012 New Zealand International Wine Show have been released. From 2,122 wins entered, there were 224 gold (10.56%), 416 silver (19.6%) and 940 bronze (44.3%) medals awarded, these adding to 1,580 wines awarded medals, a whopping 74.46% listed. These percentages are higher than the norm and are attributed to “the high quality of the wines entered” according to the Kingsley Wood, who goes on to state in his First Glass newsletter “Many of the bigger wine companies submitted only wines above a quality level, so many of the wines available in supermarkets were not in the lineup.”

The results echo that found at the Spiegelau International Wine Show judged a week earlier. Again the number of top Sauvignon Blancs and Pinot Noirs was proportionally lower, though there were strong numbers of bronzes, indicating difficulty to achieve the very highest levels of quality, though reaching a good standard indicated sound work in vineyard and winery. Chardonnay seems on a high and Riesling as well as Pinot Gris to a slightly lesser extent. The numbers of successful Bordeaux variety wines is proportionally higher, bolstered by the Australian entries. At this show, Aurstralian Shiraz features exceptionally well, and this is the case again. New Zealand Syrah seems to suffer in comparison. This is the nature of jugding a variety with no country boundaries – some styles come through ‘better’. And as the Spiegelau judging, Sparkling wines came through strongly and Gewurztraminer less so.  Because of the larger number of entries, the range of international wines featured is greater and more interesting. Click here to see my analysis of the Spiegelau judging.

The NZIWS is the largest wine competition judging in this country, and credit must be given to Kingsley Wood in organising and running the show. Having been involved in the judging for a number of years, I can attest to the amount of hard work that goes into it. The judges certainly have a difficult task with classes of large numbers of often very demanding wines, and to see the results come through with much consistency to that of other shows (and reviews of independent commentators such as myself!) gives great credibility to the show system. Those involved in judging know that the wine show system has a certain and particular methodology that enables large numbers of wines to be assessed in a logistically efficient way. It’s all about consensus between a number of experienced palates working together in a team. As always, individual differences in perspectives play a part, as with individual and independent reviewers’ approaches. A wine’s true standing can be gauged by the sum of these results and reviews. It’s a good thing that wine producers and wine consumers have a variety of resources to call upon to help them make winemaking, marketing and drinking decisions.

A full list of all the medal winning wines can be seen on the website for the New Zealand International Wine Show www.nziws.co.nz The trophy winners will be announced at an awards dinner held on 29 September and published on-line on 1 October.
