The iconic Scenic Cellars is shifting premises, one block towards the centre of Taupo to Tuwharetoa Street. The move is to shift with the times, incorporating the growing demand for the complete wine and food experience. As of Monday 1 August, Scenic Cellars Wine Merchant & Eatery will have the combined offerings of the extensive wine range and expertise for which Scenic Cellars has based its reputation on, with an eatery that will introduce concepts that will cater to the trends that developing here in New Zealand as well as overseas.
Taupo has been a Mecca for this country’s wine lovers, ever since Peter Taylor opened the Scenic Cellars doors in 1981. The wine retail business has grown to have one of the largest stocks of fine wine of any single store in the country, a visitor-attracting underground cellar and powerful mail-order operation. In 2002, employees Ian Isaacs, Cate Langley and Sarah Barlow took over the business, then installed the southern hemisphere’s second ‘Enomatic’ taste dispensing machine, and incorporated ‘The Vine’ eatery in 2008.
It makes a great deal of sense in today’s tight retailing environment to have a wider ranging but fully integrated business, and the move to a more efficient site to accommodate this expanded concept will enable Scenic Cellars to further flourish. I can see it has taken a lot of courage for Ian, Cate and Sarah to move further up in the premium sector of the market when it is so easy to bow to the pressures to ‘dumb-down’. The latter path seduces with its tangible cash-flow, but leads to the death-loop of discounting and competing with FMCG operations. In the current economic climate, the best plan for independent operators is to be visibly different and individual, and work in the high quality sector with an eye to the long term. To maintain branding is a key to success.
The new address for Scenic Cellars Wine Merchant & Eatery is 37 Tuwharetoa Street, Taupo. The telephone number 07 3785704 and website address www.sceniccellars.co.nz remain the same.
