Aitken’s Folly 2012 Central Otago Chardonnay and Pinot Noir

25-Mar-2014
Aitken’s Folly is the small 3 ha family vineyard of Fiona Aitken and husband Ian Percy, former oil industry people who moved from the U.K. to Central Otago for a family friendly lifestyle. Situated on the outskirts of Wanaka, the ‘Riverbank Road’ vineyard was planted in 2008, to 2.25 ha of clones Abel, 667 and 5 of Pinot Noir, plus 0.75 ha of the new ‘Corton Charlemagne’ 548 clone Chardonnay. This clone is also used by Kumeu River and Locharburn, but not bottled separately by them. Viticulture is managed by Fiona and Ian, with guidance from James Dicey, and the wines are made by Dan and Sarah-Kate Dineen at the nearby Maude winery. The total annual production is 700 – 1,000 cases. It will be interesting to follow the wines as the vines grow in maturity. Here, I review the first releases from the 2012 vintage. www.aitkensfolly.com
