Alpha Domus 2013 The Navigator and The Aviator

02-Jun-2015
Although Alpha Domus is an accomplished all-rounder in Hawke’s Bay wine styles, their claim to fame must be the Bordeaux-varietal reds ‘The Navigator’ and ‘The Aviator’, the latter wine part of the limited edition flagship ‘AD’ range. I’ve been privileged to try all of releases of ‘The Aviator’, one special event being a vertical from the first vintage in 1996 to 2009 (click here to see my report). The wine is made from fruit and blocks especially grown for the label, which is released only if the quality is deemed exceptional. ‘The Navigator’ is designed to be fully representative of the varieties, the Bridge Pa Triangle district and the Alpha Domus house style. It is made more often, in larger quantities, and invariably it is more affordable. Yet it has a track record of success that will give The Aviator a run for its money! Here, I review the 2013 releases of these two reds; the year being one of the best vintages in living memory. Both of the wines are outstanding. www.alphadomus.co.nz
