Alpha Domus – Merlot at Work

04-Dec-2012

The Ham family have considerable experience behind them in working with Merlot, the favoured and foundation red variety in the Bridge Pa Triangle District on the western side of the Heretaunga Plains near Hastings. Growing grapes for 21 years and making wine for 17, the Hams have a great understanding of the nuances of what each vineyard block in the district brings to the fruit, and the styles that are best made. Clearly the grapes that are ideal for rosé are not for fuller-bodied dry red table wine in the Bordeaux style. It is also up to the winemaker to recognise and interpret the fruit so that it can be handled sensitively and appropriately for the various expressions. Here I review two wines, with Merlot as a prominent feature, worked to be expressed differently, but also very well in each case by Kate Galloway. www.alphadomus.co.nz
