Aronui Wines from Kono

13-Mar-2013
Aronui is the new range of wines from Kono Beverages, who are the owners of Tohu Wines. The Aronui range represents the wines from the Nelson vineyard holdings of Wakatu Incorporation which is connected to four iwi within the top of the South Island of New Zealand: Ngati Rarua, Te Atiawa, Ngati Koata and Ngata Tama. Aronui refers to ancient Maori mythology and the pursuit of knowledge, the arts and working with the land. This clearly has synergies with the contemporary approach to winemaking. Kono’s vineyard is ‘Whenua Matua’ which means ‘Significant Land’, and is located in the Upper Moutere. The initial release includes wine made from contract fruit and consists of a Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, with a rosé to follow later in the year. Riesling, Gruner Veltliner and Albarino will come available in 2014. www.aronuiwines.co.nz
