Ash Ridge 2013 Chardonnay and Merlot, and 2013 Hills & Rivers Merlot

28-Jul-2014
Ash Ridge is the Hawke’s Bay winegrowing venture of Chris and Sonya Wilcock who purchased bare land in Heretaunga in 2000 to establish vines, releasing their first wines in 2008. Their 8 ha ‘Cardoness’ vineyard on S.H. 50, not far from the Ngatarawa Road junction is planted to Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Syrah, and is the home base for the Ash Ridge cellar door and 100 tonne winery which was built at the start of 2014. Next to ‘Cardoness’ is Shawn Hill’s ‘Raptor Rise’ vineyard which supplies Ash Ridge with Viognier and Malbec. The Wilcok’s are in partnership with the ‘Peet’ Vineyard for the Bordeaux red varieties. All three vineyards are near each other within the Bridge Pa Triangle district, but have differing soils, the latter on a ridge of ash pumice, hence the brand name. Lauren Swift is the winemaker and the Wilcocks have Chris Archer as a consultant. The Ash Ridge wines have enjoyed show success from the start. Here, I review the 2013 Ash Ridge Chardonnay and Merlot, and new ‘junior brand’ ‘Hills & Rivers’ Merlot, also from the outstanding 2013 vintage. www.ashridgewines.co.nz
