Austrian Varieties at the Heart of Gold

09-Apr-2012
Steve and Eileen Voysey of Spade Oak in Gisborne have taken to the innovative varieties with a passion, and have in their 16 ha vineyard Marsanne, Petit Manseng. Albarino, Tempranillo and Tannat, as well as the more conventional and established Chardonnay, Viognier and Syrah. As with other forward-thinking producers, they see Austrian varieties as being particularly suitable and have made a Gruner Veltliner white in 2010, joining a growing number of releases of this variety, and a St Laurent red in 2009, the second wine label of this variety seen in New Zealand. Steve and Eileen have these two wines under their secondary ‘Heart of Gold' banner, and if the varieties fulfil their potential, they may be bottled in their ‘Spade Oak Reserve' range. I reviewed these two wines early on in the piece, just after they were released. The wines have changed in the 18 months since, and here are my current thoughts. www.spadeoak.co.nz
