Awatere River Wine Co. 2014 Whites and Rosé, and 2013 Pinot Noir

08-Sep-2014
Louis Vavasour heads the Awatere River Wine Company, continuing a family heritage of farming in the Awatere district of Marlborough that began in 1887. Louis’ parents Peter and Anna planted the first grapevines in the Dashwood area of Awatere in 1986, thus pioneering the industry there. It was natural that their son Louis would train and learn winemaking overseas coming back home to make wine. The varieties grown and styles made are Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and a Rosé made from the latter. Louis believes intuition has a significant role in winemaking, giving a nod to the traditional old-world styles, and minimal intervention to make wines that partner food. Here, I review the new 2014 Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris and Rosé, and the 2013 Pinot Noir. The whites are softly textured and the Pinot Noir shows attractive richness. www.arwc.co.nz
