Babich Family Estates, Black Label and Irongate Releases

19-Mar-2014
Babich is operating out of this country’s newest winery. Commissioned and built just in time for the burgeoning 2014 Marlborough vintage, the winery is geared for quality wine production. Located in the Cloudy Bay Business Park, the 4,000 tonne winery is small in comparison with the likes of Pernod-Ricard, Oyster Bay and Villa Maria, but it’s a big step for Babich, who remain in reality a boutique producer. The new winery features many tanks for individual ferments and a dedicated row of Pinot Noir fermenters, as well as being kitted out with all the new toys. There’s the potential to extend the capacity to 6,000 tonne in the future. This all coincides with the steady growth of estate holdings in Marlborough, now totalling around 250 hectares. Babich are particularly excited about their acquisition of the property next to their ‘Headwaters’ Wairau site, thus extending the range of organic wines from Sauvignon Blanc and Gruner Veltliner to include Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. In the meantime, the original Auckland winery processes up to 800 tonnes of North Island fruit including that from the Gimblett Gravels. The total wine portfolio has never looked stronger. Here, I review a selection of the latest premium end wines, under the ‘Family Estates’, ‘Black Label’ and ‘Irongate’ ranges. www.babichwines.co.nz
