Babich Wines – Fruit and Clarity First

25-Jan-2013
It can be said the first duty for all winemakers is to make sound wine that expresses what nature and the land provide in the grapes. That means clean and fresh fruitiness, without any extraneous input. In the best vintages and in making top flight wine from the best fruit this is easier than in making wines at the commercial and value end of the market. A winemaker's true skills can be seen in making these less aspirational wines. The team at Babich seems to excel at all levels. The flagship ‘Patriarch' and ‘Irongate' wines are sheer class, showing superb fruit or terroir, these wines standing among the best in the country. But at the lower end, the ‘classics', the Babich wines over-deliver, especially so for their price, and show fruit with clarity. Here is a selection of such wines reviewed. www.babichwines.co.nz
