Babich Wines – Venerable in the Modern Age

30-Jan-2011
Babich Wines is a venerable winemaking business. Established in 1916, Babich is one of this country's pioneers; Dalmatian in origin and still based in Henderson, West Auckland. Babich remains family-owned and operated, with the founder's children Peter, Joe and Maureen at its head and third generation David as general manager. Yet it operates as a thoroughly modern and innovative winemaker, with much of its production exported. The styles are classical New Zealand expressions of what this country does so well – aromatic and elegant whites and reds from Marlborough, with intense, refined complex wines from Hawke's Bay. Within this construct, there are variations on a theme, with single vineyard, winemaker-influenced and organic wines, making the breadth quite encompassing. Quality and value is beyond reproach. The overseas market recognises Babich for what it offers, but in the crowded domestic market, the wines are often overlooked. No doubt Babich will remedy this situation. www.babichwines.co.nz
