Batch Winery Waiheke Island Pinot Gris

23-Sep-2015
Batch Winery is the Waiheke Island wine venture of the Thomas family who purchased the Island’s highest vineyard with established vines of 20 years of age. Pulling out a third of the existing vines and replanting, there are now 3.5 ha, with another 1 ha to be added this spring. The operation on Carsons Road is designed to produced small and specific batches of wines, in the style of Northern Rhone Syrah, Burgundian Chardonnay, Pinot Gris and Bordeaux-styled wines, and unusually, Italian method Blanc de Blanc sparkling wines. The wines made generally carry a ‘batch’ number. The first harvest was in 2010, estate fruit accounts for approx. 10 tonnes, but including client wine, the winery handles about 30 tonne. The projected estate tonnage is 22 tonnes by 2020. The winemaker is Daniel Struckman. Here, I review two Pinot Gris wines. www.batchwinery.com
