Bellbird Spring ‘Sous Voile’ NV

07-Sep-2015
Bellbird Spring is the winegrowing operation of Guy Porter and his family who purchased and settled in the Waipara Valley in 2002 following many years overseas. Of two vineyards owned, the ‘Home Block’, planted in 2002 has 1 ha dedicated to making their ‘Vin de Terroir’, a mix of Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer, Riesling and Muscat Ottonell in a European field blend style. The ‘Home Block’ also has Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir planted and wine made as varietals. The ‘Block Eight’ vineyard is planted to Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Gris, and is a warmer site.

As can be expected, a traditional approach is taken in the vineyard with organic and biodynamic practices, and in vinification with hand-picking, whole bunch pressing and the use of indigenous yeasts. The Porters are not averse to making wines that are different, this the ‘Sous Voile’ which is inspired by the wines of Jura, France with elements of fino amontillado sherry seeing aging in old wood. The ‘Sous Voile’ is presented without vintage, variety or appellation and its personality is technique derived – using aromas of flor and oxidation and astringency for food matching. www.bellbirdspring.co.nz
