Black Barn 2014 Chardonnays and 2013 Cabernet Franc

31-Aug-2015
The production of Black Barn wines is extremely limited but carries the highest reputation. Winemaker Dave McKee draws on 10 ha of vineyard in the Havelock Hills area of Hawke’s Bay, and supplements the estate holdings with a small amount of contracted fruit to make a diverse, but extremely strong range of wines. Dave takes great care in their making, as there are risks with small batch vinification that allows very little room for latitude. However, the attention to detail also results in the fine-tuning that lifts quality to another level. Chardonnay must be Dave’s favoured varietal, and many would see the ‘Reserve’ Chardonnay the flagship. However, the classical Bordeaux red styles are just as successful, and the ‘Reserve’ releases are contenders for top wine from Black Barn too. Here, I review the 2014 Chardonnays, these considered by Black Barn to have great potential, plus the 2013 ‘Single Vineyard’ Cabernet Franc, from a great vintage. They are very impressive. www.blackbarn.com
