Black Barn’s Chardonnay Base

23-Oct-2012

From a small 10 ha vineyard comes a large and diverse range of bottlings under the Black Barn label. The quality of the wines has meant that all of the wines are highly sought after, and quickly sold out. Dave McKee, the winemaker since 2002, has applied a very thoughtful and meticulous approach to the vineyard and winemaking, and the continued and growing reputation is an enviable one in a winegrowing region that is filled with stars. The ‘Reserve' wines are the flagships, and while there is a red, it can be argued that the ‘Reserve' Chardonnay is the special wine. Dave certainly has an affinity with the variety, no doubt a fondness he brought with him following his time at the Church Road winery. I review a selection of Chardonnay wines here, including two new releases from the challenging 2011 vintage, with a Riesling and a Syrah, these being varieties that Dave McKee is putting considerable effort into as well. www.blackbarn.com
