Black Estate Waipara Valley Pinot Noir 2012

09-Oct-2014
The cooler 2012 vintage in the Waipara Valley region appears to be a superb one for Pinot Noir. Many of the wines have received top show awards and glowing critical acclaim both domestically and internationally. Earlier this year in June, I reviewed the Black Estate ‘Damsteep’ Pinot Noir 2012 which comes from their ‘Damsteep’ vineyard in Omihi, just 10 km away from the home vineyards which are just north of the Waipara Junction (click here to see my review). The wine impressed me and is a well-structured, complex, savoury red-fruited expression, which winemaker Nicholas Brown sees as an expression of the terroir, site and limestone derived clay soils. Marketing manager and Nicholas’ wife Pen Naish has sent the 2012 ‘Estate’ Pinot Noir for review, which makes a fascinating comparison of two single vineyard wines. I see similarities in the complexity of flavour, but the ‘Estate’ wine is more refined in texture and tannin expression. www.blackestate.co.nz
