Black Quail Central Otago Pinot Noir 2009

26-Feb-2013

Black Quail Estate is the wine venture of Rod and Mirani Keillor who purchased a 20 ha block at the base of Mt Difficulty at the end of Felton Road in 1999. 7.17 ha of Pinot Noir vines were planted in 2001 on the north-north east facing site with soils comprising lake bed sediments, deep sandy loams with quartz and schist gravel. Approximately 49% of the vines are 10/5 clone, 29% clone 115, 10% each of clones 5 and 6, the remainder 667 and 114. Gary Crabbe is the viticulturist and Francis Hutt of nearby Carrick the winemaker, taking over from Matt Dicey. The Black Quail wines have proven to be very successful on the show judging circuit. Here, I review the 2009 vintage. www.blackquail.co.nz
