Catalina Sounds – Pinot Gris and Noir Releases

14-Mar-2012

Catalina Sounds is a Marlborough wine producer whose name pays homage to the Catalina flying boats which operated in the Marlborough Sounds. The company is under the business umbrella of Endeavour Vineyards owned by John Valmorbida who has also has winegrowing interests in his home, Australia as well as in wine distribution. The first vintage of Catalina Sounds Sauvignon Blanc was in 2005, and a highlight was the 2009 vintage winning the trophy for Champion Sauvignon Blanc at the 2009 ANZWA. Winemaker then, Nina Stocker departed after the 2011 vintage, her role taken by Peter Jackson from Whitehaven and Te Whare Ra previous to that. Though Sauvignon Blanc is the major focus, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir complete the range of varieties, and this review looks at the latest releases of the latter two, made by Nina Stocker. www.catalinasounds.co.nz
