Charcoal Gully Gewurztraminer 2011 and 2008

10-Oct-2013
Charcoal Gully is the 9 ha vineyard of Brian and Cheryll Sanders planted on their 28 ha property on Mt Pisa Station near Cromwell. 7 ha of Pinot Noir were planted in 2003 and 2 ha of Gewurztraminer in 2004. The viticulture is under the care of James Dicey and the wines made a VinPro, firstly by Carol Bunn and now Peter Bartle. The name ‘Sallys Pinch’ on the label refers to a small impassable basin near the summit of Mt Pisa, Sally being a horse that carried its rider to the last ‘pinch’ at the top of the mountain range. The first vintage of Gewurztraminer was the 2007 and the vintages have picked up good medal awards since. I enjoyed the 2012 wine recently (click here for my review). Here I look at two earlier releases, the 2011 and 2008. www.charcoalgully.co.nz
