Cottier Estate – Pursuing a Dream Three Generations Old

05-May-2011

Peter Cottier, his wife Yvonne and family are realising a dream of Peter's forebear Francois, three generations distant, who sickened by the brutality of the whaling he enlisted himself in, urged his brother Pierre to bring vine cuttings from France to establish a vineyard. "An illness has struck the vines of France” reported his brother in November 1881, and Francois' dream faded. The 14 ha Cottier vineyard on Dakins Road, near Gladstone in the Wairarapa, planted to Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir has the potential to fulfil the dreams of the Cottiers past and present. Winemaking is by Peter Cottier in consultation with Paddy Borthwick. www.cottierestate.co.nz
