Dashwood, Grove Mill, Clifford Bay and Goldwater 2014 Sauvignon Blancs

13-Oct-2014
Establishing Foley Family Vineyards in 1996, Bill Foley quickly became a significant winery owner and vintner in California and Washington. In 2009, Foley Family Vineyards purchased the New Zealand Wine Fund giving the company a strong foothold in Marlborough with the Vavasour, Dashwood, Clifford Bay and Goldwater brands. In 2011, Foley acquired the Martinborough producer Te Kairanga and this was followed by the buying of the New Zealand Wine Co., which operates the Grove Mill label, and recently, it was confirmed the sale of Martinborough Vineyard to Foley was approved. Along with shareholdings in the EuroVintage wine distribution company and The Nourish Group of restaurants, as well as ownership of Wharekauhau Lodge in the Wairarapa, Bill Foley has a fully tiered business in wine and hospitality in New Zealand. Under the Foley Family Wines ownership, there has been a revitalisation of each of the business with investment and strong management. In the case of the wineries, the benefits can be seen in the confidence in the winemaking and positive nature of the wines.

Here, I review four new release 2014 Marlborough Sauvignon Blancs that come from the Foley Family Wines umbrella. Speaking to winemakers Susan Van Der Pol and Stu Marfell at Vavasour, they expressed their pleasure at harvesting all their fruit in excellent condition before the rains set in. It is a very good vintage for Foley Family Wines. www.dashwoodwine.co.nz  www.grovemill.co.nz  www.cliffordbay.co.nz  www.goldwaterwine.com
