Doctors Flat Central Otago Pinot Noir 2011

24-Apr-2013

Upon leaving Carrick Winery, it wasn’t going to be long before winemaker Steve Davies would make his own mark on the Central Otago wine scene. Steve had set up his personal vineyard, 3 ha in Bannockburn, in 2002, with Dijon clones 114, 115 and 777. His first release was the 2008 vintage, followed very quickly by the 2009, and this in the latter half of 2011. I was very impressed with the wines (click here to see my reviews). The 2010 vintage wine was released late last year (click here to read my review), and it was very expressive of the year that produced many wines with powerful tannin structure. Steve has now begun to see a vineyard character in the wines, described as "a slightly spicy, violet, blackberry component” evident in all the releases to date. Interest and sales are clearly very good, as he is now about to release the 2011 vintage, which he sees as allowing the wine show an increasingly better balance between the fruit flavours and structure. Here is my review of the new 2011 Pinot Noir. www.doctorsflat.co.nz
