Doctors Flat Central Otago Pinot Noir 2012

26-Jun-2014
Attending the Central Otago Pinot Noir Celebration earlier this year, it was very pleasing to see the young Doctors Flat label attracting considerable attention and plenty of praise. I was impressed with the Doctors Flat Pinot Noir wines at a vertical tasting during a visit then (click here to see my report) and the latest 2012 release showed especially well at the Masterclass Tasting (click here to view) at the Celebration. This should be no surprise, as winegrower and winemaker Steve Davies has a strong reputation for crafting top Pinot Noirs wines in Central Otago over the years, and his own venture from his small, 3 ha vineyard in Bannockburn, managed to organic viticulture, was sure to succeed. Particular attention is paid to soil health and the beneficial outcome on flora and fauna, and its influences on the vineyard and vines. From the inaugural 2008 vintage, there have been positive steps forward with each release, and the 2012 that I tasted several times at the Central Otago Celebration may well be his best yet. Here is my ‘Feature Review’ of the wine in more controlled conditions. The wine has become more concentrated and showing its true complexity. www.doctorsflat.co.nz
