Dog Point Vineyard 2011 Barrel Wines

26-Apr-2013

While Ivan Sutherland and James Healy portray themselves as Kiwi blokes on an easy and fun adventure, their wines are as serious as can be. Ivan as one of the pioneering grape growers in Marlborough and James as a ‘boffin’ oenologist in Auckland began their wine careers over three decades ago, coming together at Cloudy Bay, where their contribution in making some of Marlborough’s most exciting wines was cemented. Moving on and setting up Dog Point Vineyards with their families, they released their own wines from the 2002 vintage in 2004. The ‘Dog Point’ label continues Ivan and James’ dedication to making outstanding wines. While stainless-steel made Sauvignon Blanc is the most important wine for Dog Point, it is the ‘barrel wines’ that express the skills at building in complexity and interest. Here, I review the new release 2011 ‘barrel wines’, the ‘Section 94’, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. www.dogpoint.co.nz
