Esk Valley – A Selection of Current Releases

31-Jan-2014
Part of the Villa Maria Estate group, the Esk Valley winery at Bayview, just north of Napier in Hawke’s Bay, has retained a sense of individuality since it was built around 80 years ago. The traditional and original winery still functions superbly in today’s modern age of space-age materials and design, and it is reckoned that the different aspects contribute to the unique wines which seem to capture the land, site and place, especially with the Hawke’s Bay fruited wines. Nowadays, Esk Valley relies heavily on the Gimblett Gravels for its top ‘Winemakers Reserve’ wines and sources fruit from all over The Bay and even Marlborough in the South Island. However, the most special wine is ‘The Terraces’, made from vines on the steep hillside behind the winery. The human face of the Esk Valley wines is senior winemaker Gordon Russell, who recently celebrated 25 years with the company. He is one of the most thoughtful and passionate winemakers I know, and the wines made reflect his considerable input. Here, I review a selection of current releases that show the breadth and depth of quality at Esk Valley. www.eskvalley.co.nz
