Fairbourne, Two Tails and Fernhook 2013 Sauvignon Blancs

09-May-2014
Fairbourne Estate is the unique winegrowing venture of Russell Hooper and Sarah Inkersell, who have dedicated their efforts into making the finest Sauvignon Blanc wines from Marlborough. Sarah is the winemaker and in charge of finance, and Russell the salesperson and marketer. I visited them in July last year to discuss their philosophy and approach in making only one varietal, and in a style is different to the mainstream (click here to read). The ‘Fairbourne’ wine is a refined and truly elegant wine with purity, clarity and subtlety, and represents the terroir of the hillside vineyards in the Southern Valleys district. The wine uses the best selection from the ‘Skyedale’ vineyard, but may have a small portion from other sources for ultimate balance and completeness. Supporting the flagship label is the more classical Marlborough expression under the ‘Two Tails’ label. Here, I review the new 2013 releases including the ‘Fernhook’ wine, which I haven’t seen before, these wines also from fruit from the Southern Valleys hills. www.twotails.co.nz  www.fairbourne.co.nz
