Falconhead – From The Wine Portfolio

06-Aug-2014
‘Falconhead’ is one of the new wine labels launched by John Coney for ‘The Wine Portfolio’, his collection of brands which started when he purchased Morton Estate in 1995. The development of the ‘Riverview’ vineyard in Hawke’s Bay and further acquisition of vineyards in Hawke’s Bay and Marlborough have been paralleled by the greater commitment to sparklings wines and the introduction of the ‘Nikau Point’, ‘Penny Lane’, ‘Southern Cross’ and ‘Cathedral Cove’ bottlings. Having sold the ‘Morton Estate’ brand, ‘Falconhead’ has been introduced, the name referring to the New Zealand falcon, one which resides in Hawke’s Bay and has an active role in pest control of the company’s vineyards. Here, I review the new 2013 ‘Falconhead’ releases, a Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir from Marlborough, and Chardonnay, Syrah and Bordeaux-blend from Hawke’s Bay. www.wineportfolio.co.nz
