Forrest ‘The Doctors’ Riesling 2013

04-Feb-2014
John Forrest has been a promoter of Riesling from his earliest days, and indeed specialises in a number of different styles under different tiers. ‘The Doctors’ Riesling is a classic case of innovation, perfect for this brand, as it explores the Germanic Kabinett style. Here, the winemaker much achieve a harmonious balance between alcohol, acidity and residual sugar, while taking great care with phenolics, and providing enough fruit extract to ensure the wine is delicate rather than ‘thin’. John’s first release was the 2006, and this wine immediate won gold, judges recognising its excellence. One of a few wines in the low alcohol-higher residual sugar style then, it has now been joined by a growing number from other producers. It is the consistency of style and quality that Forrest achieves that is becoming its hallmark. Here, I review the new 2013 vintage release. www.forrest.co.nz
