Forrest – The Doctor’s Wine

11-Dec-2012

Drs John and Brigid Forrest have a number of ranges to reflect the different philosophies and approaches to the wines they make. The ‘Forrest' label is described as ‘quintessential Marlborough' and ‘The Valleys' wines reflect the unique valleys and landscape. The ‘Tatty Bogler' range is for the wines from the Otago vineyards and ‘Newton Forrest' covers the wines from the ‘The Cornerstone' vineyard in the Gimblett Gravels in Hawke's Bay. Wines seen as the ultimate in quality for John go into the ‘John Forrest Collection', whereas the innovative wines trialling new varieties, styles and winemaking techniques fit in ‘The Doctors' tier. These are particularly interesting, not only for me, but also the wine industry and for wine consumers, as they give an inkling what might be the next ‘new thing'. The wines are not conventional and push the boundaries, and for that, they have already developed a very strong following. Of particular interest is the Gruner Veltliner of the previous vintage. A number of New Zealand Gruner Veltliners show the ability to become more concentrated and textured with bottle age. I review four ‘Doctors' wines, prescribed by the two doctors. www.forrest.co.nz
