Frizzell Wines – Art On and In the Bottle

24-May-2011
What a startling effect the labels on the Frizzell wine have. They are bold, individual and unforgettable, and creations of Dick Frizzell, one of this country's best-known contemporary artists. When Dick and Jude Frizzell settled in the Hawke's Bay, they were captivated by and wanted to be part of the burgeoning wine scene. Teaming up with Rod McDonald, one of The Bay's most experienced winemakers, Dick set out to make small batches of wines in a style he enjoyed – "generous and rewarding”. This fitted in with his philosophy, desire and of course ability to create limited editions of art – in the form of each label for the wines. Rod's brief is of course to make art in the bottle. I review two reds, made to the preferred Frizzell style. www.frizzellwines.co.nz
