Georges Road 2012 Aromatic Whites

27-Dec-2012

A visit to Wellington by Georges Road winemaker Kirk Bray gave us the chance to catch up with the news at his 8 ha vineyard situated in from Mount Brown Road, off Georges Road. His vineyard is neatly subdivided into four equal blocks, with Syrah and Pinot Gris in one block each, and his Riesling over the other two. (The Pinot Noir he makes comes from fruit from the ‘Williams' site next to Black Estate.) This neatness is a reflection of his precise and measured approach to his winemaking, where he tries to oversee the finer details to allow the most natural processes occur with minimal intervention. The wines are made at ‘True and Daring' the former Sandihurst winery, at West Melton, where he is the winemaker, and thus has full control. The 2012 aromatic whites are reckoned to be excellent, and in the same style as the 2010s with the longer, cooler growing season providing higher acidity and exceptional flavours. I review the two wines here. www.georgesroadwines.co.nz
