Gillman Matakana 2005 – 2007

22-Nov-2012

The Gillman Vineyard is a labour of love for Toby Gillman and his family. Working at the Providence vineyard in Matakana as a student, then experiencing a stage at Chateau Angelus in St Emilion in 1997, Toby and the Gillman family established 0.6 ha (1.5 acres) of vines in the iron-rich volcanic clay soils of Sharp Road in Matakana. The varieties are classical Right Bank in the proportions 63% Cabernet Franc, 34% Merlot and 3% Malbec, and the vines are low and close-planted at over 6,000 vines per ha. The first vintage was in 2002, and the hand-made wines, since, have garnered high acclaim from commentators who have managed to taste from the very limited production. I review the 2005 and 2006 vintages, and new 2007 wines. www.gillmanvineyard.co.nz
