Greylands Ridge and Alex 2014 Central Otago Pinot Noir

27-Mar-2015
Pat and Judy Medlicott established their Greylands Ridge Central Otago winegrowing venture when they planted 4.2 ha of Pinot Noir vines on Letts Gully Road in Alexandra in 2002. The vineyard is subdivided into 4 blocks of approximately 1 ha each to different clones, these being 667 and 777 in one block, the others being 5, 115 and Abel. The first release was with the 2006 vintage, and they have proven to be successful on the wine judging circuit. The wines are made by Antony Worch of Alexandra Vintners. Visiting over Labour Weekend last year (click here to see my report on my vineyard visits), Pat and Judy announced their desire to finally properly retire, so have put their vinous dream on the market. Until a sale is concluded, it’s business as usual. Here, I review the new 2014 ‘Alex’ and ‘Greylands Ridge’ Pinot Noirs. The ‘Alex’ is the second label, and the wines are differentiated by a barrel selection, which in some ways also reflects the different clones planted in their separate blocks. www.greylandsridge.co.nz
