Greystone and Muddy Water 2011 Releases

24-Oct-2012
In March 2011, Greystone Wines in the Waipara Valley purchased its neighbouring operation Muddy Water. As with many such acquisitions came the fear of the disappearance of a popular brand with a strong following, or at least its degradation to a secondary tier. This fear was fuelled by the subsequent sales of older and current vintage wines at bargain prices. I visited Greystone in May earlier this year and winemaker Dominic Maxwell dispelled the fears stating that existing stocks were being cleared for a fresh start, and that the Muddy Water brand was certainly going to be continued, the wines under the label set at the premium level, alongside those of Greystone. (Click here to read my report of my visit.) The purchase of the Muddy Water vineyards and winery gave Greystone not only their own winery facility, but also a fully establish certified organic vineyard, and these have been incorporated into the Greystone business with immediate benefits. The 2011 Greystone and Muddy Water wines were both made at the Muddy Water winery, and now we are seeing the release of 2011 vintage Muddy Water wines priced at the same level as those of Greystone. Suddenly the portfolio has been enlarged, the wines of Muddy Water with the organic point of difference. The Greystone management are clearly astute. Here are my reviews of the new 2011 releases of Greystone and Muddy Water. www.greystonewines.co.nz
