Grove Mill, Vavasour and Te Kairanga Under Foley Family Wines

28-Apr-2014
It has been a welcome change to see Foley Family Wines add Grove Mill and Te Kairanga to its New Zealand portfolio joining the Vavasour and Clifford Bay brands. These with its holdings in California and Washington in the United States makes the company an important international one with quality aspirations, and this is very desirable scenario in a wine world where it is all too easy to dumb down. There are some who rue the change of hands and what could potentially be a change from the original visions, but both Grove Mill and Te Kairanga were experiencing tough times and not conducting business successfully. With the Foley ownership has come an injection of capital and a stable operating culture which has added a greater sense of stability to the Marlborough and Martinborough regions. Winemakers Steve Simpson at Grove Mill and John Kavanagh at Te Kairanga can call on and share experience with the likes of Stu Marfell and Susan Van Der Pol of Vavasour, making the group a stronger collective. Here, I review a selection of wines from the Foley Family Wines group, under the ‘Sanctuary’ and ‘Grove Mill’ (www.sanctuarywine.co.nz and www.grovemill.co.nz), ‘Dashwood’ and ‘Vavasour’ (www.dashwoodwine.co.nz and www.vavasour.com), and Te Kairanga (www.tkwine.co.nz) labels.
