Harvest Estate 2013 Martinborough Pinot Noir and Auslese Gewurztraminer

24-Dec-2014
Harvest Estate is the new boutique winegrowing venture of Michael Gregg, originally from Marlborough, but settling in Martinborough to make limited quantities of hand-crafted wines. He is one of the new generation of winemakers in the district. Michael sources fruit from three vineyards: the home 0.81 ha ‘St. Martin’ block on Huangarua Road planted to clones 95 and Mendoza, the vines 19 y.o., a 5.26 ha vineyard on Omarere Road with Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir, vines up to 23 y.o., and from 5.67 ha on Ponatahi Road with Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling up to 20 y.o., this supplemented with other grapes grown locally if desired.

Michael has taken over Chris Buring’s winery on Kitchener Street where he makes and matures his wines, and he has Glenn Smith responsible for the viticulture. Michael’s first vintage under Harvest Estate was in 2013 when he made a Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Gewurztraminer. In 2014, he added a sweet ‘Summer Rosé’, a late-harvest blend, Chardonnay, a Syrah and an oaked Sauvignon Blanc to the range, with Riesling to come on board in 2015. Michael intends to keep his output small, processing up to 40 tonnes annually to focus on quality and to be able to oversee every aspect of the winegrowing and making. Here, I review the 2013 Pinot Noir and Auslese Gewurztraminer. www.harvestestate.co.nz
