Hawkdun Rise 2014 Gewurztraminer and 2012 Pinot Noir

13-Nov-2014
Hawkdun Rise is the boutique vineyard and accommodation operation of John and Suzanne Grant on Letts Gully Road in Alexandra, Central Otago. It is a true boutique, the vineyard measuring only 2 ha, planted mainly to 10/5 clone Pinot Noir with some transplanted Dijon clones, and 5 rows of Gewurztraminer. John tends the vineyard personally, and contracts Peter Bartle at VinPro to make the wine. The Pinot Noir has enjoyed considerable show success over the years, most recently the 2011 and 2012 vintages awarded gold at the 2014 Air New Zealand Wine Awards. The Gewurztraminer is produced in tiny quantities and much of it is sold at the cellar door or consumed by the accommodation guests. I enjoyed my recent stay at Hawkdun Rise, the friendly welcome and excellent hospitality (click here to see my report), and I can heartily recommend it. Here, I review the up-coming new releases of the Gewurztraminer and Pinot Noir. The Gewurztraminer was made Kevin Clark and Fred Reinds at Black Ridge due to the tiny amount of fruit requiring very small batch vinification. www.hawkdunrise.co.nz
