Heart of Gold 2011 Albarino and Petit Manseng

05-Dec-2011
Steve and Eileen Voysey are just beginning to reap the fruits of their adventurous and innovative endeavours with their unique 16 ha vineyard situated in the heart of the Gisborne growing region. Keen and indeed passionate in experimenting with cultivars that are unique, they have already released wine under their ‘Spade Oak' and ‘Heart of Gold' labels made from Gruner Veltliner, St-Laurent and Tempranillo in addition to the more recognised Chardonnay, Viognier and Syrah varieties. In 2011, the Voyseys micro-vinified Albarino, the variety from Galicia in north-west Spain, and Petit Manseng from the Jurançon, south-west France, and bottled minuscule amounts of each, 27 litres in 375 ml bottles, to show their friends and loyal customers what is in the works. For 2012, the projected production of Albarino is 100-150 dozen and Petit Manseng maybe 25 dozen. Based on how the 2011 wines from a challenging vintage show, the 2012 wines will be exciting prospects and should be worth seeking out. My notes on the trial 2011 micro-vins, which are fully finished wines, follow. www.spadeoak.co.nz
