Johner Estate 2013 Whites and 2011 Pinot Noirs

20-Sep-2013
Karl Johner, his son Patrick, and their team at the end of Dakins Road in Gladstone have an admirable enthusiasm that sees them successfully make a very large and broad range of Wairarapa wines. Across the board, the wines show very good quality and a sense of regionality. They are, along with the like of Gladstone Vineyard one of the stalwarts of the area. How they manage this business as well as the sister wine estate in the Kaiserstuhl district on the other side of the world is remarkable, but they do it! In consultation with European chefs and sommeliers, the Johners look to make wines that match food by not being overtly fruity or punchy, but by being elegant with delicate flavours. Thus they don’t expect them to be wine show winners, but enjoyable at the dinner table. Here, I review the new 2013 white and 2011 Pinot Noir releases. www.johner-estate.com
