Karikari Estate – Far Sighted in the Far North

16-Feb-2011
The most northerly sited commercial vineyard in New Zealand has ideal growing temperatures in its favour, but battles very strong winds and humidity. Grape were first planted in 1998 and the first vintage was in 2003. Winemaker Ben Dugdale has had remarkable success with his wines, especially Chardonnay and the Bordeaux varieties. Pinotage and Tannat are red varieties of great interest and extend the vision of the owners and the winegrowing team. The estate covers 40 ha. The styles of both white and red varietals is of great breadth, depth and volume. Whether this is the result of climate, site, winemaker's signature or a combination of the interaction of these is still not fully determined! www.karikariestate.co.nz
