Kono’s 2014 and 2013 Releases from Tohu and Aronui

29-Sep-2014
The ‘Tohu’ Marlborough and ‘Aronui’ Nelson wines of Maori-owned Kono Beverages are making excellent progress. The consolidation of the ‘Tohu’ brand to primarily showcase the company’s Awatere vineyards, and the introduction of the ‘Aronui’ brand for wines soured from Nelson, particularly from the ‘Whenua Matua’ vineyard delivers a message of the company’s focus in these two regions where the parent company has the major part of its seafood and horticultural holdings. With the company’s own winery in operation, winemaker Bruce Taylor has captured the essence of the Marlborough and Nelson regions with great success, and the medal count at recent wine shows has been very pleasing. Here, I review a selection of 2014 releases and more complex 2013 vintage wines under the Tohu and Aronui brands, all medal winners, with three of them taking gold in either the Bragato or New World Wine Awards. www.tohuwines.co.nz  www.aronuiwines.co.nz
