Latitude 41 Nelson Pinot Noir 2013

04-Mar-2015
The Spencer Hill winery in Nelson was established by Phil and Sheryl Jones in 1988 and has quietly crafted wines with innovation since. The Spencer Hill and Tasman Bay brands are the company’s premium and most recognised labels, promoting the quality of the company’s Upper Moutere and Coastal Ridge fruit. Fruit is also obtained from sources in other regions, and the ‘Latitude 41’ brand primarily employs fruit from Nelson and Marlborough from vineyards along latitude 41, naturally.

In producing the company’s Pinot Noir wines, winemaker Matt Rutherford notes that although the company has an annual output of 7,000 cases, there is not one red fermenter. Matt and Phil ferment all of the red wines in one tonne batches, which allows them to keep all the fruit different blocks separate thus enabling greater blending options. Here, I review the 2013 Latitude 41 Pinot Noir, made from Nelson fruit. www.spencerhillwine.com
