Leaning Rock Central Otago Pinot Noir 2009

04-Sep-2014
Leaning Rock is the Central Otago winegrowing venture of geologists Dhana Pillai and Mark Hesson who purchased a 12 ha property on Hillview Road outside Alexandra. Dhana and Mark personally established their vineyard and are self-taught in viticulture and winemaking, but are supported by the winegrowing fraternity in their endeavours. The late Mike Wolter was one of the important influencers when they planted to produce their first vintage in 1994. The original vines were on their own rootstock, and grafted around 12 years ago. The 1 ha of vines is dedicated to Pinot Noir with a selection of clones, along with Riesling, and a tiny number of Chardonnay, Gewurztraminer and Schonburger (Rosa Muskat) vines that are not really commercially viable, but grown for interest. Dhana and Mark are resident on site, tending the vineyard by hand and making the wine there. The 12 ha includes 5 ha of pine forest, and the couple grow a variety of fruit and nuts, and are near self-sufficient including energy usage. Here, I review the 2009 Pinot Noir. www.leaningrock.co.nz
